16th Annual West Wicomico Heritage Ride
For the past 16 years, riders from all over the region have enjoyed the West Wicomico Heritage Ride and helped to preserve our Eastern Shore heritage. This bike tour of western Wicomico County takes riders across 300 years of Maryland History. Begin your day at Pemberton Historical Park, named for Pemberton Hall, a plantation home built in 1741 by Issac Handy, one of the founders of the city of Salisbury. From there, explore such towns as the scenic riverfront community of Whitehaven, with the United Methodist Church (1891-1892), Whitehaven Hotel (1810) and Ferry (1685). Discover the historic communities of Hebron and Quantico hold too, as well as Bivalve’s beautiful Cedar Hill Marina.

Wicomico County is cycling country. The roads are wide and flat here on the Eastern Shore. Choose from a 15, 32, 50 or 62 mile ride. Riders receive a T-shirt, map and cue sheet upon check-in. Rest areas are conveniently placed throughout your tour complete with sports drinks, iced water and healthy snacks to fuel your journey. SAG service is available as well. End your memorable day back at Pemberton Historical Park for an outdoor picnic and live music until 2:30 pm. Beer will be sold too (valid ID required).
Proceeds of the tour go directly to historic preservation and education. Pemberton Historical Park’s goal is to rebuild many of the plantation’s outbuildings and become a working 18th century plantation. The Whitehaven Heritage Association has used the proceeds to restore the 1886 Whitehaven Schoolhouse and gather artifacts and records of the village history. It is raising funds to rebuild the village church steeple to its original height (it was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954).
