West Wicomico Heritage Ride

Ride Across 300 Years of History!
Wicomico is cycling country! The roads are wide, and the even terrain makes it possible to enjoy any of the routes – whether it’s a 15, 32, 50, or 62 mile ride. The tour route literally takes you through 300 years of Maryland history — along some of the most scenic roadways on the Eastern Shore. The ride begins near Salisbury, at Pemberton Hall, which dates to 1741. Pemberton Hall was the plantation home of one of Salisbury’s founders. From there, you travel through scenic farmlands, historic villages, and tidewater marshes, complete with great blue herons and bald eagles.
Rest areas are complete with sports drinks, iced water and home-baked brownies (and yes, we have healthy snacks, including fresh fruit).
Stops include Green Hill Church. Located midway up the Wicomico River, its colonial parishioners came to the church by boat. Its 1730s wooden box pews and high pulpit are all original. The tour also makes a loop through the small, but historic village of Whitehaven, one of Maryland’s hidden gems. There are many well-preserved homes built in the 1800s, a marina, and two bed and breakfasts. The rest stop is located in the historic one-room schoolhouse, which houses a display of local history. The Whitehaven Ferry, one of the three remaining river ferries in all of Maryland, has carried passengers across the Wicomico for over 300 years. Upper Ferry, also on the route, dates to the 1700s. The longer tour routes take you to Bivalve along the Nanticoke River. The tour ends back at Pemberton Historical Park with an outdoor picnic and live music until 3:30pm.

Historic Preservation Rides on You!
Proceeds of the tour go directly to historic preservation and education. Pemberton Historical Park’s goal is to rebuild many of the plantation’s outbuildings and become a working 18th century plantation. It is rich with yet to be excavated sites, including the river wharf and customs house, which date to the 1700s. The Whitehaven Heritage Association has used the proceeds to restore the 1886 Whitehaven Schoolhouse, and gather artifacts and records of the village history. It is raising funds to rebuild the village church steeple to its original height (it was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954).

Training for the Sea Gull Century?
We are an official Sea Gull Century Training Ride — if you are training by cycling through hilly terrain, this ride will help you prepare for the Sea Gull Century. Our route has the same flat terrain, and temperature and wind conditions.
