Pemberton Historical Park's Summer Junior Naturalist Program

The Junior Naturalist program is a great opportunity for children to learn more about the Maryland outdoors and explore their interest in environmental studies. Naturalist program participants will discover Maryland Eastern Shore habitat, learn to protect natural resources and get active outdoors! We are looking for children who are courteous, friendly, enthusiastic, trustworthy and willing to keep to the rules of the Education Center and the program. To apply, the following application must be completed and submitted to the Pemberton Historical Park Naturalist's office by Saturday, May 1st. Please keep in mind that we can only accept 12 children into the program, so be sure to complete the application in its entirety by or before the aforementioned due date. Applicants will be informed about their acceptance into the program by Friday, May 14.

  • Applicants must be between the age of 8-14 on June 1, 2010
  • The program lasts three months - June through August
  • There will be 6 meetings or 2 meetings per month on Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings (please plan on attending as many of these meetings as possible to complete the program)

Meetings will consist of training's and projects:

  • Animal Husbandry - learn how to care for and handle PP teaching animals and assist Naturalists with public programs
  • Conservation
  • Wilderness Survival skills - navigation, gathering food, etc.
  • Plant, Bird and Animal Track identification
  • Park Beautification Projects - Such as trail maintenance and assisting in the heritage garden
  • Astronomy - Visit a traveling Planetarium!

The final meeting will be a campout held at the Education Center where parents will be encouraged to attend.

  • Each participant must participate in at least 2 programs in the 3-month period (the park gives 4-6 programs per month) which include weekend educational programs, special events and birthday parties
  • Each participant is required to read at least one, nature-related book during the 3-month period
  • At the end of the program, participants will receive their name, picture, and bio on the Pemberton website for a year featured as a knowledgeable resource for park patrons!
