West Wicomico Heritage Day

In partnership with the Whitehaven Heritage Association and Pemberton Hall Foundation, Wicomico County Recreation & Parks is proud to present West Wicomico Heritage Day, featuring the 22nd Annual Heritage Bike Tour. Proceeds go directly toward historical preservation of Pemberton Historical Park and the Whitehaven Schoolhouse as well as numerous environmental education programs offered to Wicomico County children and families.

West Wicomico Heritage Bike Tour

For many years, riders from all over the region have enjoyed the West Wicomico Heritage Bike Tour and helped to preserve our Eastern Shore heritage. This bike tour of western Wicomico County takes riders across 300 years of Maryland history. Begin your day at Pemberton Historical Park, named for Pemberton Hall, a plantation home built in 1741 by Isaac Handy, one of the founders of the city of Salisbury. From there, explore such towns as the scenic riverfront community of Whitehaven, with the United Methodist Church (1891-1892), Whitehaven Hotel (1810) and Ferry (1685). Discover the historic communities of Hebron and Quantico too, as well as Bivalve's beautiful Cedar Hill Marina. 

  • Time: 7:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Show & Go from 7-8:30 a.m.
  • Where: Begins at Pemberton Historical Park
  • Distances: 
    • 32, 50 or 62 Miles
  • Registration Fees:
    • Adults - $35 ($40 after 8/25/17)
    • Children Ages 8-18 - $20 ($25 after 8/25/17)
    • Children Ages 7 & Under Ride Free (No shirt included.)
    • Register by Sept. 4, 2017, to guarantee an event shirt.

Additional Bike Tour Information: Helmets are required. Choose from a 32-, 50- or 62-mile ride. Riders receive a T-shirt, map and cue sheet upon check-in. Rest areas are conveniently placed throughout your tour, complete with sports drinks, ice water and healthy snacks to fuel your journey. SAG service is available as well. End your memorable day back at Pemberton Historical Park for an outdoor picnic and music until 2:30 p.m.

Historians Scavenger Hunt

People may also participate in our Historians Scavenger Hunt. Following clues, teams of up to five will explore historical sites throughout Pemberton Historical Park to complete tasks and challenges. All ages are welcome to participate.
  • Time: On-site registration begins at 10 a.m. Scavenger hunt begins at 11 a.m.
  • Where: Pemberton Historical Park 
  • Registration Fees: On-site registration of $5/group (also includes family activities at Pemberton Historical Park and a tour of Pemberton Hall)

Pemberton Park Activities

The Pemberton Hall Foundation will open Pemberton Hall for tours and offer informative lectures on the History Trail. Historically accurate vendors will also be on site for demonstrations and questioning. Events start at 10 a.m. The cost is $5 per family for these activities and also includes the Historians Scavenger Hunt.

  • Colonial Games and Crafts
    • Times: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
    • Games include a bilbo, hoop and stick and the game of Graces. 
    • People can grind corn, make an herbal sachet or draw a silhouette.
  • Pemberton Hall Tours
    • Times: 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. 
    • Pemberton Hall is an outstanding example of 18th-century Eastern Shore regional architecture. Visit this fully restored gambrel-roofed brick structure that was built by Isaac and Anne Handy in 1741.
    • Listen to Dr. Dottie Yeatman, portraying Joanna Johnson, Isaac Handy's neighbor, who has all the latest news of the day on the plantation. 

  • History Trail Guided Tour – 45 minutes
    • Times: 11 a.m., 1 p.m.
    • Stroll along Pemberton’s History Trail as you learn about the narrows of a tidal gut once bridged by a dam and causeway. Pass by the invisible remains of Mulberry’s Landing Wharf dating back to 1746 and documented as the oldest of its type in the country.
